Pre-purchase exam: navicular issues?
Hi everyone…I’m new here but thought all you knowledgeable people might be able to help me out! I am considering buying a 7 year old OTTB as a low-lever eventer, and brought him to the vet for a pre-purchase exam yesterday.
He was slightly short strided at the trot while lunging on hard ground (although he strides out beautifully in the arena and on the trail), and the vet suggested x-rays of the front feet. She saw signficant “synovial invaginations” that she was concerned about, especially in the front right foot. The choppy trot, combined with a 6-week lameness he had a few months ago, could indicate navicular problems down the road.
I’ve heard such mixed things about being able to see navicular problems in x-rays, but I thought you all might be able to give me some advice. I have attached the radiographs.
How concerned should I be about his navicular bones? As a 6 year old eventing prospect, would I be taking a significant risk buying this horse? I appreciate any help or advice.
