Debride or not to debride

I have read and read and picked brains and talked with my current vet and the vet that is going to do the debridement and another large animal hospital and WSU and I have come to the conclusion the debridement will give Clyde the best chance of clearing this up.

I assume when farriers here talk about debridement they mean getting all of the dead tissue out right? This includes the whole canker?

I guess what my question to the experienced farriers here is, which of you agree that debridement is a must and which of you agree to only topical medicating.

I am taking Clyde to the vet tomorrow at 4:30 and he is scheduled for complete debridement on Wed. morning. I am still open to more opinions.

Also, who are in favor of shoes and medical plates or just wrapping? I think that the medical plates will make it easier for me which in turn makes it best for the horse since what needs to be done can more likely get done. I have also read that it can help with support. I also believe it will help with me taking him for walks and for turnouts in a non wet arena.

Please let me know as soon as you can. Thank you.
